Christmas is the one time of the year when I put a real effort into baking. I love making the cookies my mom used to bake with me. I've even added a few new recipes of my own. Here I'm assembling a few of the ingredients I will be using.
a little butter...
I don't remember my mom using a drill motor to grind the nuts but it works great for us.
Almonds are the nuts of choice. I use them in many of the German recipes. I've also been known to use walnuts in the Cinnamon Stars and Thumbprint cookies.
The first cookie I made was the Cinnamon star. It's called Zimtsterne in German and is one of my favorite recipes.
I also made Horseshoe cookies. These call for the ground almonds and a lot of vanilla.
These Teegebaeck (tea cookies) are a lot of fun to decorate. Carla did all of the sprinkles this year for me. Thanks, Carla!
Thumbprint cookies are also delicious. These are Mike's favorite. I used the green jelly (Apple-mint) for the color and it tastes great, too! Go ahead, Mike try a green one....
The Spritzgebaeck (Butter cookies) are everyone's favorite. Once again, this recipe calls for the ground almonds and a lot of butter. I dip them in a homemade chocolate glaze. Yum!
Carla and I also braved the Candy Cane cookies. These things are delicious but super time consuming. They contain almond flavoring and are one of the recipes I added from my Betty Crocker Cookie Cookbook. They are Paul's favorite.
I would like to thank Carla for all of her help with the cookies. We spent the entire day baking and had a wonderful time. Thanks, Carla!
